LeYa Group
Investment in this sector began with the creation of LeYa Group, in 2007.
Having identified that there was an opportunity to consolidate the Portuguese speaking educational publishing and editorial markets, the LeYa Group was formed through seven rapid acquisitions over a period of 16 months in 2007/8: Grupo Texto Editores (March 2007), Edições Asa II (September 2007), Caminho (September 2007), Gailivro (October 2007), NovaGaia (December 2007), Dom Quixote (December 2007) and Grupo Oficina do Livro (July 2008). In addition to its presence in Portugal, LeYa operates also in Angola and Mozambique and has recently launched activities in Brazil.
LeYa’s ambition is to become one of the global leaders in Portuguese speaking countries and in publishing the leading Portuguese language authors, both in publishing and school editions markets, promoting the language throughout the world. This objective is already fulfilled in Portugal, Angola and Mozambique. The missing leg is Brazil, which is LeYa Group’s strategic objective.
Nowadays, in Portugal, LeYa Group has the number two position in the Textbook market and clear leadership in the general publishing market.
In both Angola and Mozambique markets, the publishing and school editions segments are growing very fast, and LeYa has a strong local presence being already the leading publisher over there (primarily education). Local authors are used for the education titles, with some production support from Portugal; the general publishing activities are also the leading imprints, with the most high profile local authors, as well as publishing some foreign titles.
In 2009 LeYa Brazil was successfully launched in the Brazilian general publishing market and is now preparing to enter the textbook market in Brazil.
